The sound issue appears to be resolved.   Someone suggested disabling the 
on-board sound---which I did by 
disconnected two jumper pins.   The sound didn`t return initially but a day 
later, it was working.

  Hi.  Unable to get any sound out of my computer (worked before) with Windows. 
 Platform-  AMD Athalon XP 2400 processor, 2Ghz, 
  Sound Blaster no. 4700 sound card.  All is plugged in, incuding speakers.   
No sound.   **** CAN ANYONE PLS HELP ***
  
  Also, various items on keyboard not working.  ie.   @ symbol only works if I 
press the ALT key and the numeric 2 key.   Haven 
  not figured out how to get the number key to work  listed about number key 3. 
  
  Is there a keyboard reshuffle that needs to be setup ...  hmm   just noticed 
I cant use the apostrophe key or the question mark key either on std keyboard.
  
  newbie frustration...although I like this OS- Ubuntu.     THANKS  very
