Public bug reported:

I have succesflly made a new installation of Ubuntu 5.04, followed by a
successfull transition to 6.06 SLS and 8.04 SLS.

However, the last installation, using kernel image 2.6.24.-23-386 will
not boot succesfully and stops on "waiting for root disks" and landing
on the initramfs shell.

The problem is, although the ide-generic modules are present, they are
not loaded.

This machine is a old (1998) Toshiba laptop 320CDS.
uname -a: Linux machinename 2.6.24-23-386 #1 Sun Jan 25 23:32:00 UTC 2009 i586
GNU/Linux
cat /proc/version_signature: Ubuntu 2.6.24-23.48-386

I can resume booting executing on the shell:
modprobe ide-generic
