Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

Ubuntu 8.04 installed on external usb drive kernel 2.6.24-23-generic.
During the last update (using aptitude only for that tusk) of acpid and
related packages ubuntu froze at the point when configuring acpid. To be
more specific at the point of restarting HAL actually and the last
message before it hanged was "Starting HAL" and then it just freezes up
and I have to switch off the laptop using the power button. Now whenever
I try to update or install something I get the following message:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct
the problem.
E: Couldn't rebuild package cache

and every try to run the suggested command ends with the same system
freeze. Pretty annoying ...

Wondering if this has happened to someone else too? I can't do much
about log files and stuff since the whole system stops at the moment of
failure but willing to try anything suggested to fix this.

Some more info: HAL version 0.5.11rc2, acpi version 0.09.

Thanks,

Igor
