Public bug reported:
I had an existing computer running Ubuntu 8.04.1 without problem. I
downloaded the 8.10 Alternate CD .ISO and burned it to CD-R. I
shutdown, installed a new hard drive, then booted from the CD. I was
able to successfully complete the "Check Media" test. But when I
actually tried to do the install, it would get about half-way through
the file-copy process and then hang.
I tried re-doing the download and the burn; same problem.
The eventual solution was to replace the CD drive.
So, it appears that the "Check Media" test is using a different driver
or access mode than the actual install? I can understand the installer
trying to optimize the performance by not using a generic driver, but it
doesn't make sense to do this at the expense of compatibility. If the
test module had used the exact same access-mode I assume it would have
reported an error.
P.S. I initially selected 'Ubiquity' as the responsible package even
though I don't really know this...
