This is in 8.10 intrepid AMD64 (server kernel).
I've found numerous similar reports around the web; I have no idea which
package is at fault.
# dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/scd0

gnomebaker says:

brasero won't give me the option to do anything but make an .iso file
nautilus just keeps asking for blank media even though I've inserted it.
