However, at least I have got an older CD-RW which shows the same symptoms as you and clarkkent435 reported if I attach it to Texas Instruments controllers (sometimes also on other controllers) so that I can work on it when I have some time to spare. (Well, from my own perspective as upstream driver maintainer, it's all fixed in the new firewire drivers.)
