Sorry for the delay, I had extreme priority items to deal with.  I upgraded my 
machine to 8.04.  There were problems
with packages, but after futzing around I got it.  (All the package error stuff 
should not be done by me on the command line,
I would think it should be done in the background.)

I put the machine into hybernation.  It went to sleep.

It came up fine.

Looks like Ubuntu 8.04 solved the problem.
