Thanks for the help.  Finally got it working by uninstalling the
official nvidia driver that was previously installed.

Have you tried:

sudo aptitude reinstall xserver-xorg-core
sudo aptitude reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx
sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-173
