Hmm. Well, I just encountered the same crash. I am running Jaunty on amd64 (Core 2 Duo) machine with fully updated packages as of a few minutes ago.
I noticed that two volume icons were displayed in my gnome-panel. I right-clicked on each one. One of them only showed "Mute" and "Sounds Preferences". The other showed the old list of context menu options.
