Thanks for all your help so far. Have changed my sources.list to point to archive.ubuntu.com and have dist-upgraded. There are no new updates now.
I am getting past the GDM login screen again but once I try to login it hangs at the wallpaper. Cursor is not an arrow this time, though. Cursor is the busy/working ball and the segments are frozen (not moving round like they normally do).
