It seems to be stable now. I don't know if its because of updates or if it was a one time deal. I was running the "system testing" utility in system -> administration for the first time. When I pushed the next button to start the test, the screen changed so that there was only "checking for Internet connection" and it went to the next test. I realized the Internet card wasn't connected so I hooked it up and went back to the previous screen to restart. this time it crashed. My wireless was in the process of connecting so that could be why.
