As I said, this happened when I booted the 2.6.27-11 kernel. I can't say for sure now whether it happened the first time I booted it or not. The modules definitely seemed to be rebuilt during boot (the bootsplash stopped and I got the dkms output on the console).
Has anyone else reported this? If not, perhaps the most sensible course of action would be for me to wait until it happens again (if it does). That way I will be able to observe exactly what happens, and you can tell me anything you would like me to look out for.
