I really think this is a very irresponsible policy. I have recently
taken over a job at a secondary school that uses Unbuntu Server (Feisty)
for its VLE, public-facing cms, e-portfolios and integrated email. I
need to download a package via apt-get. I can't do that now without
upgrading. I can't just upgrade the server on the fly because if the
server goes down the whole school will stop functioning (students will
not be able to access lesson content, our public facing website will
disappear and all staff will loose email access). I can think about
upgrading our server during the next school holidays but what am I
supposed to do in the mean time...?

...I tell you what, move to Suse I reckon. This is appalling. Fair
enough, the packages will not be maintained now - but to remove the
repositories is highly irresponsible - whether you are still supporting
this version or not.

IME typing 'apt-get upgrade' can be one of the easiest ways to nuke your
system in a single line. Thanks a bunch. I realise this is open source
and a free OS - but so are many other distributions and they don't treat
their users like this. This policy has just made my life very difficult
for the next few weeks and the loss of productivity is likely to mean I
switch distro. As you can guess, I'm pretty peeved.
