Now it works! Both suspend and hibernate work!
Major change since my last report:

The weird message I reported earlier:
hutzpa:/home/am# echo mem >/sys/power/state
bash: echo: write error: No such device or address
is no more.
I had answered the poll as "Too buggy to try any more", but retried
today as per Albert's request for more complete bug reports. Wether the
fix is permanent or a quirk of whatever else I messed around is not
clear yet.
