I have removed the duplicate to bug 273306. Though the issues are similar, they're not the same and they occur on different hardware. I have made the tag "ghost-monitor" that can be used to group bugs where the problem is that X thinks there is something connected to an unconnected port.
It would probably be useful to know if this is still an issue with the latest Jaunty.
