I looked at this a bit more today and indeed, the auth.log messages
don't seem to be related to this issue.

The behavior I observe is that when I select 'Guest Session', the screen
properly switches to vt9 but soon displays the error message
'authentication failed'. The background is all black, and there doesn't
seem to be a window manager loaded since the error message has no window
borders and cannot be moved/closed.

I switched to vt1 and tailed /var/log/auth.log, and no errors are
actually reported there (except for a seemingly innocent line - Jan 18
12:28:39 xyz su[7839]: + ??? root:guest).

What was however interesting is that compared to my normal user session
on :0, the guest session on :20 doesn't have an associated x-session-
manager process. That is, with :0, I see gdm invoking X :0 and x
-session-manager. However, with the guest session, I only see gdm
invoking X :20. This likely indicates that the X server itself is
failing at some point.

On a (un)related note, ecryptfs isn't working for me either and I see a
few errors related to non-existent .ecryptfsrc file.
