To be absolutely clear: We're not making a 2D version of the launcher, that would require a completely new front-end in Gtk. What we are hoping to do is to determine the current 3D acceleration capabilities, and throttle the animations to match. This would mean that, if the launcher could determine it is running on software rendering, then it would switch off animations.
