I also have this problem, caused by the same update process (thanks to those
who have already
identified it and posted solutions here). I don;t have the previous kernel in
my /boot area and at this time I am unable to download a live USB-storage
image, so I am trying to boot with modified GRUB kernel command line settings.

Alas, I am unsure of the precise syntax of how they should be put on the kernel
command line in GRUB. I have tried a variety of options (including '
"acpi=off", "hpet=disable", "highres=off" ' with the quotes and commas etc.)
but I still get a kernel panic every time (more-or-less exactly as
reported). Can anyone clarify what exactly I should put on the kernel
commandline (and where).

Thanks
