Has tratado usando la consola de recuperacion? (en el GRUB), creo que hay una opcion para arreglar el servidor grafico, tambien podrias tratar de ver si funciona en ubuntu 8.10 (Hablo español. mas abajo en Ingles ↓) Have you tried using the Recovery Mode in the GRUB?, also you can try Ubuntu 8.10
