Binary package hint: kdebase
Right-clicking on a app launch icon on Kubuntu Intrepid KDE 4.2 and
select "Rename". Try to rename icon from "something.desktop" to
another name, without the ".desktop" extension doesn't work (on two
different machines).
However, right-click/Properties/Application/Name does work and permits
the removal of the .desktop extension.
