That stock answer sounds rather patronising. The bug may be filed in different terms to what you might use but it is a real bug.
The bug is: the text for "don't ask me again" is poorly chosen because it's unclear whether it means "never update and don't ask me to" or "always update automatically without asking". Also, it is a bug that if the option is checked, there is no clear way to ever change it again. However, in Jaunty I cannot reproduce a dialog that has this checkbox: if you change your server in the software-sources panel you get just either "reload" or "close", and the update manager does not ask to reload if out of date.
