What is your version of IPython? I suspect you have a version of IPython
below 0.9, and as a result the combination of the wthread and pylab
options don't work well. This is something we tuned during the 0.9
development period.

The Mayavi package you are using are quite old, and this is why you don't
get the pipeline view. If you are going to be using Mayavi a lot, I
suggest you use the 3.x apckages on my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~gael-varoquaux/+archive

They are compatible with Ubuntu 8.10. When you install them, they will
remove python-matplotlib (I haven't really figured how to avoid that).
Once you have installed them, you can install python-matplotlib, it will
work with no problem.

Alternatively, you can wait for 9.04 to come out, it has the latest
version of Mayavi:
