I have now opened a bug in Mandriva's bug tracker for what appears might
be the same kind of regression happening there, as confirmed on a
ThinkPad T20:

http://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=27721

In the Mandriva case, a successful work around was to continue to use
the older kernel (2.6.12) with the newer distribution.
