Ok, after more futzing, it turns out my problem is unrelated: Looks like at some point usb audio started getting loaded into index 1 before hda_intel had loaded, and then there was a collision. I did add an "options snd_usb_audio index=3", but snd_usb_audio is ignoring this, which seems to be the real "bug" (unless snd_usb_audio simply doesn't support that parameter). So I have shuffled the order around to account for snd_usb_audio always taking next-available index, and now it works.
If snd_usb_audio is supposed to support the "index" parameter, then I believe there is a bug there. I will reconfig and reboot to verify if of interest. digression: The really sad thing is that 2.6.24-23 now fails to bring up VIDEO (nvidia), so now that I have got audio working, I am still having to boot an old kernel. :( I have now rebooted about 10 times, and every boot into -23 fails, and every boot into -22 succeeds.
