A new symptom appeared, and gave me the hint to work around the problem
well enough in order to boot the system: The nvidia card failed to be
recognized temporarily, forcing me to plug the monitor into the onboard
video output (intel motherboard, i810 video driver).
When I removed the nvidia video card (7300 GT), the kernel just booted.
After logging in, I was greeted with three warnings from apport, two
from the 2.6.24-23 kernel, and one from 2.6.24-22. I let apport open a
bug report for two of them, one for -22 and one for -23, and marked both
as duplicates of this bug. Maybe there are other information there that
might help identify what's going on here, but at least now I can boot
and work.
