Sorry all, this hasn't been high on my list. Originally I ended up editing the xorg.conf to force the resolution to 1280 x 800, and it was ok.
Had no troubles with upgrading to newer releases till 8.10. Now the video defaults to a very 'speckly' look. Adding sisfb to /etc/modules has resolved this problem.
