Public bug reported:

As in summary, on ubuntu 9.04 amd64 with 180.29 nvidia driver, X refuses to
start, tryes several times to load nvidia driver but fails with error:
Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)

Dmesg shows:
  Feb 12 00:11:53 Homer kernel: [ 309.494062] NVRM: request_mem_region failed
for 16M @ 0xfd000000. This can

Anyway module nvidia is correctly probed as lsmod |grep nvidia shows
  nvidia 8125208 0

Using driver version 173 works fine, with some glitches due to compiz, I think.
My video card is:
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 7600 GT (rev a2)
on agp bus on a nForce3 Motherboard .
