I don't think the free driver is at fault, since I also tried Beryl and it didn't exhibit this particular problem (and although buggy as well, was overall working much better) Also, I can' t use the proprietary driver anyway, as it doesn't support compositing as Sebastien pointed out, but also because the newer versions of the driver have just now dropped support for my card ! I have a Radeon 9250, and the new driver dropped support for anything older than the 9500 ! I guess ATI is trying to send me a signal : "I don't want you as a customer anymore, please buy Intel next time." Well, I think I may well follow their advise...
