Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-27-k7
Adept prompted me to install some security updates, I saw one was a new
kernel. I installed it and rebooted.
The next day when I exited KDE my system locked up, I couldn't trigger a
reboot, connect it over the network or even Ctrl+Alt+SysRq S/U/B didn't
have any effect, so I had to hard reset. I repeated this 3 times
trying "Log Out" the 3rd time, the result was the same.
This leads me to believe that linux-image-2.6.15-27-k7 security update
broke the nvidia binary driver
I logged the package details before I started attempting to resolve the
crash:
# cat linux.txt
ii linux-image-2.6.15-27-386 2.6.15-27.50
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.15 on 386
ii linux-image-2.6.15-27-k7 2.6.15-27.50
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.15 on AMD
ii linux-image-386 2.6.15.25
Linux kernel image on 386.
ii linux-image-k7 2.6.15.25
Linux kernel image on AMD K7.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# cat nvidia.txt
ii nvidia-glx 1.0.8776+2.6.15.12-1
NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org driver
ii nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1
NVIDIA binary kernel module common files
I had to upgrade the system to 6.10 now as I could not leave this
machine crashing when exiting X. I wish there was a way for the kernel
to avoid such fatal crashes, so at least it could give a backtrace or
log of what caused the problem.
