Geir, thank you for your care about it. I think I messed up this bug report, as I finally realized it is about several possibly unrelated issues: I apologize.
Actually, the originally reported lockup events has ceased after deactivating NetworkManager on boot and manually setting up the network after login. I have no idea whether the bug is in NetworkManager or in Xorg, but at least there is a workaround. Regarding the kernel panic, I submitted a new bug (Bug #321972), and provided more detailed information pertaining this specific issue.
