w.r.t. Alt+F6 not working, that turned out to be that the gnomecompat
plugin seems to default the "Open Terminal" keybinding to disabled -
manually configuring that keybinding restored that functionality.

w.r.t. the gconftool output:
$ gconftool --get /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/active_plugins
[core,neg,extrawm,svg,regex,place,dbus,session,workarounds,annotate,vpswitch,text,resize,png,gnomecompat,mousepoll,shift,splash,imgjpeg,firepaint,water,decoration,thumbnail,resizeinfo,video,showmouse,animation,wall,snap,shelf,wobbly,expo,fade,switcher,move,scale,scaleaddon]
except I've manually enabled the gnomecompat plugin in ccsm, so that presumably
makes this exercise unhelpful.

Regarding the fix in the PPA, if it's this one:
  * debian/patches/043-compiz-limbo-gconf:
    - reset gconf if the active_plugins gconf setting is desynced
      (but not user modified)

it's not going to help anyone who has chosen to enable additional
plugins in ccsm, like me.
