I've got a pretty good work around at this point. I have found that  
after maximizing the application, everything is ok. So after I did  
that gedit was good. Seems like it does still mess up when running in  
a smaller window.  Don't know why running under sudo would make any  
difference there, but it did. I'll do a full submission when I get  
time, just about to leave town.
