So, I figured out what the cause of this is/was. Totem fails to work properly if it cannot connect to a DBUS.
To reproduce my failure above, ssh to a remote machine and try to play an http:// URI in Totem. It should fail. Now try to do the same thing with dbus-launch: $ dbus-launch bash -c "totem http://..."; and it should work.
