Moving into the alsa-driver package, which is probably where I should have posted originally.
No solution yet. I changed to Ubuntu AMD64 from Ubuntu x86 and still the same problem, so not likely kernel related. Also, I have managed to find and look at some of the ALSA driver code but haven't been able to figure out where the mic boost translates into ALC882 instructions. I think that might be where the problem is occuring. Just a hunch really.
