The system consists of: Gigabyte GM-MA69GM-S2H MB (with on-board ATI VGA & NW controller) 1GB of RAM AMD AM2 BE2350 (energy efficient) CPU Toshiba 2.5" SATA h/d External (USB) DVD - disconnected Incidentally, XP (!) detected the NW controller and worked without any issues so the problem is not MB hw related. "sudo ethtool eth0" returns...
