I routinely suspend and resume my T61p.  I did make some changes, as far
as I can recall, these are the changes:

/etc/defaults/acpi-support

# Should we attempt to warm-boot the video hardware on resume?
POST_VIDEO=false

SAVE_VBE_STATE=false

/boot/grub/menu.lst

# defoptions=quiet splash acpi_sleep=s3_mode

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Device"
      ...
      Option          "NvAGP"       "1"
EndSection
