Problem solved.

Using menu System-->Administration-->Hardware Drivers (under Gnome), I
deactivated, then later re-activated the driver fglrx.  I believe this
forced my machine to download an updated driver.  Now I can boot kernel
2.6.27-11 just fine.

But, I do wish that I knew how to update the driver without de-
activating and re-activating it.
