Hi David, I found the problem with "acpi_backlight=vendor" (at least with the kernel 2.6.27-12-generic). Start with AC adapter pluged in. Everything works. Now disconnect the AC. Try adjust brightness - it hangs up and the screen slowly will go to very dark with no ability to be adjusted.
Just try to boot on battery only - the brightness control doesn't work at all.
