manfred, the infinity symbol renders correctly here. i can see that the
font is "Symbol", which is not embedded in the pdf document. on my
system, "fc-match Symbol" returns "Standard Symbols L", which is
included in package "gsfonts-x11".
to sum up, can you install the package "gsfonts-x11" and try opening the
pdf file again?
