Public bug reported:

After today's (Feb 18, 2009) Ubuntu 8.10 HAL update on my Lenovo Y510
laptop, I tried to use my fairly new (2 months old) SanDisk Cruzer Micro
8 GB USB drive and not only did the system not recognize it but the
drive got very hot (temperature-wise) in the few minutes it was in the
USB port. The USB drive now appears to be fried, I've tried it in other
systems and it is dead, the LED doesn't come on and the other systems
don't recognize it and it also gets very hot.

Now, maybe the USB drive just happened to die right after I applied the
HAL update and rebooted the computer. However, such a coincidence may be
due to a problem with any new HAL definitions for this particular drive
and laptop. You should check into this and do some testing.

My other USB devices, including USB drives, still work properly in the
system.
