You can try 4 also (can't be much worse than 2, in the worst case), but
I guess only 1 is stable. You can try setting 4 in the BIOS also and see
if that helps, but the performance gain will not be enormous anyway.

  well, there are some old bugs similar to this but it seems to be fixed.
  Using the radeon driver, my r350 freeze the computer loading gdm, before
  nothing appears. If i "bypass" gdm load and from console use "startx"
  freeze as well. In the /var/log/Xorg.0.log seems to load all correct,
  there are no errors, and it loads all devices after the display.
  
  i'm 9.04 user. In previous relases, it loads gdm but freezes in white
  after show the mouse pointer.
  
  I supose that you need some more information, but i don't know what or
  how obtain it.
