Thanks for following up.  Yes, incomplete -fglrx uninstallations have
been seen to cause a myriad number of different problems.  I hadn't
heard of that fglrx uninstall script, thanks.

If you have any additional notes worth including in that wiki page,
please add to it.  Meanwhile I'll move this bug over to fglrx-installer
for further analysis.

If you remember specifically what files in /lib/modules/ or the DKMS
directories you removed, it might be helpful to know.
