sorry it took me a while to reply.. i wasn't sure how to set the driver to 'nv'
i talked to somebody on #ubuntu+1 and he said i should just remove the nvidia 
driver from the Restricted Drivers Manager.. i did that and i was able to use 
the terminal, no problems..

the problem exists with the nvidia driver activated. and it exists even
with the latest updates of Jaunty. i also don't know if this might help
but i had the same issue when i was using openSuSE; so there is a chance
that the driver is broken..

while we're at it, I also get a black screen when i log in to gnome, i
have to refresh the screen by hitting ctrl-alt-f1 then ctrl-alt-f7 to be
able to see the GUI..
