quiet useful this command line util :-)

ok,
the procedure was the following, I'm running 9.04 since Alpha 2 in virtualbox
on a 8.10 host system with the latest Sun official Vbox version (newer than the
ubunbu one).

I tried to fix some bugs with guys from the gnome IRC - Evolution wasn't able
to read Google calendar recuring events.
so I installed two or tree packages out of a launchpad ppa which is only
related to fix this evo bug.

Now I installed the updates and got stuck during update because my host system
HDD was full :-)
I had to reboot the host, and after that I said Vbox to return to the last
stable point of 9.04 guest system which was right after the install.

Now I updated again, (about 300 packages) and ended up with a not starting
gnome after reboot
-> Error message: "the greeter seems to be broken ... try again".
I tried it several time ~ 20

after that I switched to command line and tryied to reinstall gdm via APT
all was fine
starting gdm manually went to the same error.

Now on IRC ubuntu+1 s.o. told me tu su my own account and use startx
first I got a failed to inalize HAL and later some of those Panel applet wasn't
loadable errors.
Gnome appeared normally BUT keyboard and mouse wasn't useable anymore.
