Hi !
I've just tested Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) Alpha 4 and the X works fine 
with my ATI Radeon HD 2600 and the free RadeonHD driver (but don't allow 3D 
hardware acceleration yet). I think the next realease of Ubuntu will be OK for 
RadeonHD, we just have to wait or install the alpha for the most impatients 
ones.
About Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), the only solution I found to get a GUI is to 
install the proprietary FGLRX driver (which is buggy and... proprietary). You 
can install it with apt or with the installer from ATI's website.
