I tried both, 32 bit versions, here are my results:

8.10, 32 bit:
Once the switch is turned to the 'off' position, both wireless and bluetooth 
turn off. When turned back 'on', bluetooth is enabled again, but wifi is not. 
The module does not crash, though.

9.04, 32 bit:
same behavior. Also, it does not resume from suspend correctly for me. 

My current workaround (in 8.04) is, after disabling wireless, to "sudo modprobe 
-r iwl3945", and then after reenabling, "sudo modprobe iwl3945"
This appears to work correctly, although it does require more effort than just 
flicking on and off the rfkill switch.
