Based on this article http://linux.seindal.dk/2005/06/04/logitech- cordless-desktop-lx700/ I don't think there is a way to handle this in X. You may ask the questions in Ubuntu forum as well. You may convert the question back to a bug report if you think something is defective in Ubuntu.
