I resolved this issue by following J.A. Watson's how to replace OpenOffice 2.4 with 3.0, see: http://community.zdnet.co.uk/blog/0,1000000567,10009699o- 2000498448b,00.htm#comment20098505. I suppose that the warning that loading apps that are not in sync with Ubuntu applies here. I have not had any issues with OO 3.0.
