I had a similar issue with my sound on my desktop computer. I was only able
to get stereo output and not 5.1 output. I found
this<http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=184814&page=3>post
in the ubuntu forums and added the .asoundrc file to my home directory
and did "sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart". That restarts the alsa
utilities. After that I noticed that my surround sound was working,
including sub woofer. Hope this is of some help to you
