Sorry to reply so late. Will try to answer to the best of my (non technical)
abilities.

This is an Indian branded laptop by the name Zenith Admirale. One sticker on
the back says "Agere Delhi D40 Rev AM5." and has a flaky RealTek 8187B wifi
card.

Yes, the kernel oops occurs while booting after a failed suspend/hibernate.
Both, suspend and hybernate fail every time attempted. While trying to
suspend/hybernate following things occur:

X server is shut down. Control is changed to some other tty. The screen is
powered back again, however only a blinking cursor is seen at extreme
top/left. It shows no HDD activity. Caps lock key press switches on the caps
lock led. However no response to three fingered salute. No response to
"suspend key" ( Fn + F1 ) press too. Had to keep the power on button
pressed to do a power off. After the machine is rebooted, it generates a
kernel oops.

Same behaviour if I switch to a text console and run pm-hybernate or
pm-suspend at the text command prompt.

Hybernate/suspend have never worked for this machine ever since Jaunty was
installed. (Kernels 2.6.28-6/7/8 )
